Sue Beesley spent 25 years working in the IT industry before leaving to become a gardener. "I spent all my time craving some green space, something green to look at," she says. These days she designs gardensfor offices, to provide spaces where workers can relax during their lunch-breaks. "It's a real sensory lift, a pick-me-up, having a garden to wander out into on a sunny day," she says.

What strikes me about this Dig for Victory film is how we've come full circle. During the Second World War, people were being asked to grow their own food as a way of helping to win the conflict against Germany: today, we're being urged to grow food to win the war on climate change.

The two-month-old vegetable garden, from which Mrs. Alarcon picks extravagant bursts of broccoli for breakfast with scrambled eggs, is both comforting and unfamiliar. It is one of 30 backyard vegetable gardens recently planted by a nonprofit group here called La Mesa Verde, or The Green Table, which makes house calls to help residents of the city’s low-income, predominantly Latino neighborhoods grow their own organic produce.
